Higher-Res Videos Coming Soon!

Well, over the course of the past year Apple has released 3 devices that support a 16:9 wide-screen display. And as the podcast is viewed very often on iTune's and Apple's devices we will now soon begin to release videos on the podcast feed in a 16:9 widescreen format. This way, GamersCast's videos will look even better on your Apple TV, iPhone, and iPod Touch.

And as all of these devices are also compatible with progressive scan, some videos may also be posted in 480p on the podcast feed, which is twice the resolution of standard videos!
If you're still using a classic 5th generation video iPod do not fret, as these videos are also compatible with all video iPods, including the newly released, 3rd generation iPod Nano. And as before, videos will still continue to work on your PSP.

Despite this, YouTube versons of our videos will remain pretty much the same as before, since YouTube is restricted by Flash 7's video quality.
We hope you enjoy these new changes, and they will be implemented into our videos over the course of the next month. And please note, that certain videos may still appear in the traditional format as before depending upon the source's input quality.

Previously released videos will also function on Apple's wide-screen devices as well.

Halo 3 Breaks 24-Hour Record Sales!

Microsoft predicted profits of $150 million after Halo 3 was on store shelves for a day. They were quite a bit off. Over $20 million off to a bit more precise. That's right, Master Chief raked in over $170 million dollars from copies of Halo 3 being sold, after just 24 hours.

Not only does this break the previous record in gaming, which was being held by Halo 2, but it also beat out 24-hour sale records from other industries, including the movie industry, who's record is held by Spider-Man 3 at $59 million. In fact, it took the whole weekend to get upto where Halo has gotten in a day.

The only industry that hasn't been beat was the book industry (I suppose you could call it that) who's record holder is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which sold 8.3 million copies in a night and generating $207.5 million. Why am I bringing up Harry Potter? Well, in Microsoft's Official Press release they said they beat both Spider-Man 3 and Harry Potter 7, but in reality Harry Potter is still on top.

Despite this, in one day, Halo 3 has had over 5 million multi-player matches and over 600 million kills online logged so far. So, Halo 3's release has definitely been a huge success!

Be on the lookout for Adam Shear's review of Halo 3, which will appear on the podcast feed within the next couple days.

LIVE GamersCast Episode over the Internet!!!!?

Hey guys and gals!
I just had the most amazing idea! We here, at GamersCast, are considering to be recording a LIVE Streaming Episode of GamersCast over the internet! This way you guys could listen to the show while we record it, comment on what we say, vote in live polls, and even join in the discussion all streaming LIVE!! But before we can make this a sure thing, I want to make sure that some people would actually show up if we were to make a live stream. So, for the first time, I just want everyone who reads this post and make comment. Just type either "yes" or "no" that you would listen to the stream if we do it. Because we wouldn't want to go through all the effort if nobody is going to show up.... We don't need too many people to make this happen, we just need a few. Heck, it would be nice to just have a dozen of the hundreds of listeners we have to show up. So, please let me know! Thanks guys, and we'll let you know about it soon once we have enough e-mails!

UPDATE: Alright, we have been getting lots of e-mails in, and we thank all of you for your honesty. And by all means continue to send in e-mails and let me know if you would come for a live stream. But I thought you would all like to know how it's turning out so far. Here's how many people said (as of 5:00 PM EST on 9/24/07):

- YES! (71%)

- No. (29%)

TGS 2007: Goodbye Tokyo!

Well, it's been a fun week of news. But all good things must come to an end, and so we say farewell to the Tokyo Game Show as they closed their doors at the convention center. And so, we must wait another year to hear news from the biggest gaming convention (next to E3) around. Of course, just because TGS is over doesn't mean the gaming news stops! And so, as gaming news comes in, we'll be here to spread it out.

As far as gaming conventions go, we still have X'07 left, along with a few other really small ones on the side. But once we receive details about TGS 2008, we'll be sure to let you know as soon as it gets out (since nothing was announced yet)!

TGS 2007: Tokyo Game Awards

The Computer Entertainment Suppliers Association (CESA) has just awarded their Tokyo Game Awards as they always do at TGS. Game eligible had to be released between April 1, 2006 and March 31, 2007.

For game of the year Monster Hunter Portable 2nd for the PSP and Wii Sports won for game of the year.

Pokemon Diamond and Pearl Version won in the category of best selling game. The Global Award for Japanese Origin was won by Dead Rising. And the Global Award for best foreign game was won by Gears of War (remember, it's Japan so Gears of War is foreign to them).

The "Special Award" was given to Idol Master and Oshare Majo Love & Berry. Of course, these games were both very "special".

And probably the most understandable category from the awards was forb excellence, in which the following games won:

Wii Sports (Nintendo, Wii)
Okami (Capcom, PS2)
Gundam Musou (Bandai Namco, PS3)
Zelda Twilight Princess (Nintendo, Wii)
Dragon Quest Monsters Joker (Square Enix, DS)
New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo, DS)
Blue Dragon (Microsoft, Xbox 360)
Pocket Monsters Diamond & Pearl (Pokemon, DS)
Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops (Konami, PSP)
Yakuza (Sega, PS2)
Professor Layton (Level 5, DS)
Lost Planet (Capcom, Xbox 360)

The CESA will also be announcing more awards tomorrow, in which they will be announcing their "Future Awards" picking the best of upcoming titles.

If this article, was confusing to you, well, your not the only one. :P

New Link's Crossbow Training Details

New details on Link's Crossbow Training have just been announced. Link's Crossbow Training is actually a free Wii game that is packaged with every Wii Zapper (not the other way around as some people have been lead to believe). It has also been revealed that the game, like Twilight Princess, is rated T, features a 4-player turn based multi-player mode, and as previously stated this bundle is only $20.

To me, it's a bit surprising how the game got its T rating so quickly, considering this will make it only the 2nd Zelda game to get a T rating. Or perhaps, it's combat is just that similar to Twilight Princess...

Link's Crossbow Training will be released alongside with the Wii Zapper on the 1-year anniversary of the Nintendo Wii, November 19th.

TGS 2007: PS3 Eye Dated and Priced!

Well, I'm not entirely positive this one actually came from Tokyo, but who really cares? Sony's new PlayStation Eye (an upgraded Eye Toy that works with PS3) has now been dated and priced. I'm gonna be short, simple, and sweet. It's $70 and it comes out on October 23rd.

TGS 2007: My Home has been Moved to Spring!

Catchy title, ain't it? :P Anyway, way over in this crazy place called Tokyo, Japan where Sony's sales are just over 10% of the market, good 'ol Kaz decides to drop the bomb during the press conference that the PS3 Home is being delayed until next Spring! As we have reported previously, PS3 Home, which was announced during GDC 2007, is an online community where you have a virtual character and mingle with other people, like a sort of realistic MySpace.com It's a free download, but heck you can still waste $20 or so on it to give your virtual character a hat that says "Buy MotorStorm!"

But enough of what we already know, here's what's new. During Sony's Press Conference, Kaz lets everyone know that they are delaying Home's release
until Spring 2008, rather than the 4th quarter release we were promised previously. They said it was done to get more feedback on the service and that they'd say more later.

But hey, Kaz isn't able to get out that easy, as he was asked specifically why it was delayed during the Question & Answer session, following the conference. Then, he decided to change his excuse to, wanting Home to have more appeal to wider audiences, though I don't see what they could quite do to this idea. I mean, Home sounds pretty straight forward to me, how could they make any more appeal? Well, I guess we will see in the near future...

(I didn't sound like I was ranting too much in that post, did I?)

That's right, a new PlayStation 3 6-Axis controller is in the works and Sony has released a full list of titles that will support the new controller. Even older games will get upgrades to support the rumble feature before it is released, most notably is Resistance: Fall of Man. But of course, you gotta lay out the money for a newer controller before you can feel it!

TGS 2007: 3 New Kingdom Hearts Games

Well, Square Enix revealed that they are making 3 new Kingdom Hearts games. All of which are for portable platforms, with a pretty crazy title. And so Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days (how am I supposed to pronounce that?) will be coming for the Nintendo DS, PSP, and mobile.

It was revealed in a game reel shown at TGS, but unfortunetely as I am not exactly a Kingdom Hearts fan, I can't say I quite understand it. :P So, here's a snippet from IGN.com's article about the game describing it:

"Story details were sketchy, but it appears Birth by Sleep will be set in "the distant past," according to text in the trailer. 358 / 2 (called 358 over two), whose title, said Square, will apparently make sense once you play the game, will take place somewhere around the events of Kingdom Hearts 2. Coded appears to be set somewhere during the course of the first KH and its sequel, indicated in the trailer with a line of text reading "time has gone by." The overall timeline is a bit muddled, though, something a Square representative admitted to while we were asking for further explanation.

Coded's gameplay had Sora running around various dungeons filled with floating red and black blocks. During battle it's possible to engage a "debugging" mode to clear away the blocks, but their exact nature and implications with regard to gameplay were not clear. 358 / 2 had a darker thematic element than KH games of the past, with all the characters, including Mickey, draped in flowing black robes. It appeared to support some kind of four player mode, though it just may have been one human player with three AI companions. Birth by Sleep featured an unidentifiable playable character during the gameplay portions of the trailer.

Naturally, a host of Disney characters were also present in each of the trailers."

No date has yet been announced for the game.

Super Paper Mario Bug

After months of waiting PAL Wii owners in Europe were finally able to experience Super Paper Mario on their Wiis. One problem, there is a bug in the game, which will cause your Wii to freeze and force you to reboot your system. And since the game goes by save blocks rather than utilizing an auto-save feature, it can be a bit of a toll for you.

So, good old Nintendo is once again saying that they will replace your Super Paper Mario discs with new ones. Strangely, when Super Paper Mario was released in the US in early June, this problem didn't occur.

So, if you would like to have your game replaced you can head over to Nintendo of Europe's website, where you will soon find information on how to swap out your game free of charge. But news on whether or not the bug will be in the Australian release of the game tomorrow, is currently unknown, though it can be assumed they will probably fix it by then.

But if you don't want to swap out your game, I'm going to tell you exactly what causes the glitch so that you can avoid it.

In chapter 2-2 of the game, you will come across a character by the name of Mimi, who will tell you to go through a door to find a mansion key. If you're like I was when I played through the game, and decided not to trust Mimi, your game will freeze. Of course, if you do decide to trust Mimi, you'll still be able to play through the game.

Nintendo had this statement to make on the matter:
"Please note that your game freezing up will not do any damage to your Wii or the game itself, but we do sincerely apologise for this error and the inconvenience caused to your gameplay experience."

In the past Nintendo has swapped out wrist straps and even Wii Points, but never for a game before, especially because of a single glitch. In the US release of Twilight Princess there is a glitch late on in the game that will cause you to have to restart your file, except then, Nintendo decided not to do anything about it (If you are still playing through Twilight Princess, DO NOT save your progress while in the "Cannon Room"), though they did fix the glitch in the Gamecube release of the game.

Of course, if you are in the US, that means you do not need to worry about this post (except maybe the part about the glitch in Twilight Princess) because there is no glitch in that version of the game.

Super Smash Brothers Brawl Online Confirmed!

On episode 24 of GamersCast you heard me talk about how much having Super Smash Brothers Brawl offline would hurt the game. Well, worry no more! Online play has now been officially confirmed in the game. There are several game modes you can play online, but Nintendo isn't choosing to reveal them just yet.

All we know is that basic Brawls will be 4-player, and when you play with friends you can send them short messages during matches. We also learned that there will be an online system of stats so that you can see what your friend is doing and join into and existing game that your friend is in.

We don't know much more than that, but now that Brawl is online, the game doesn't seem to have anything going against it.

Super Smash Brothers Brawl will be released on December 3, 2007.

Link's Crossbow Training

Umm.... I'm not gonna jump out and say that this will be an amazingly epic Zelda adventure game for the wii. But, anyway, Nintendo has just announced today that for the 1st anniversary of Wii, Nintendo will be releasing a new game, called, "Link's Crossbow Training". The consists entirely training with Link's crossbow. Not much more than that has been announced. Other than it will ship on the Wii's 1st anniversary date, come with a free Wii Zapper, and cost an MSRP of $20. So, generally, it's a free game you get with a Wii Zapper. Kinda in the way that Wii Play was $10 game plus a Wii Remote.

We will be discussing this new game on the podcast, which is now scheduled to be recorded, tonight.

iPhone Surpasses 1,000,000 units

This really has nothing to do with gaming but it is interesting news. Today marked a huge milestone for Apple's iPhone. The iPhone has surpassed one million units today. This is just in the U.S alone because that is the only place you can buy it in for now. The iPhone is rumored to come out in Eruope this November with 3G, 16GB of storage and under T-Moble's service for around €499 ($700 in U.S dollars.) In the U.S the iPhone is $399 for 8GB and 4GB for $299 (while supplies last because the 4GB iPhone has been discontinued.) Also on September 28 the new iPod Touch will be in stores. It will bring some of the best apps on iPhone like Safari, Youtube, and of course the photo and ipod apps that have been on iPhone. It will also have an iTunes wi-fi music store where you will be able to preview and buy music on the iPod and when you sync your iPod to your computer, all of the songs you purchased will be copied to your iTunes library. The new iPod touch will cost for 8GB $299 and for 16GB, $399. But this month will be huge for iPhone owners. This week custom ringtones will be coming to iTunes so you can make and purchase ringtones for the iPhone. Also if you are one of the early buyers of the iPhone like myself, Apple is giving anyone who bought the iPhone more than 14 days ago will recieve $100 credit toward anything in the Apple retail store or Apple's online store. Details will go out sometime this week. Finally at the end of the month, Apple will release a firmware upgrade for iPhone adding the iTunes Wi-Fi music store which as I mentioned above is also appearing on the iPod Touch. I have owned my iPhone for about two months and since I got it I have not been able to put it down. It is an incredible device and does everything it promised to do. If you ever get the chance to get one or try it out do so. You will be amazed by it and will not want to put it down. However, if you do not want to pay phone bills I would highly recomend the iPod Touch.

Episode 24 Delayed

Sorry guys, I've generally killed my entire weekend trying to setup a good time with the other co-hosts, but this thing kept coming up. Steve said he had to go do some crazy thing called "homework". So, because of this we're planning on either finding a substitute for him, or by recording on Tuesday instead.

But because of the delay, I figured that I had to make it upto the listeners somehow. Last time I screwed up I made a video tutorial on how-to hack into your iPod Video Games. Now, for this, I am going to be making the most detailed video preview of Super Smash Brothers Brawl anywhere on the net. And I can guarantee that it WILL be the most detailed preview EVER! It should be up within the next few weeks. And if you can find a more detailed preview, I will eat a wasabi peanut and put the video on YouTube. And trust me in saying, that I am a complete chicken ---- when it comes to wasabi peanuts.

However, I am still confident in saying that episode 24 of GamersCast will be released this week.

Smash Brothers Brawl Update

UPDATE: It turns out the Super Smash Brothers Brawl main theme we mentioned here was actually the background music from the E3 2006 trailer that was previously released on the Smash Brothers Dojo Preview Site. So, now it was re-released, but what it did confirm is that it is the official theme. Also in the article, I said that the main theme would be the opening music for the next episode of GamersCast (to be recorded this weekend), but as we have already used that theme as the opening to a previous episode of GamersCast (seen in a previous post), we will be selecting a different song as our opening theme, though the "Gym Theme" will remain the closing for this GamersCast episode. As for the opener, maybe I'll just push shuffle on my iPod to decide. :P (The Super Smash Brothers Dojo is located at SmashBros.com)

Quite a few months ago, Masahiro Sakurai, director of Super Smash Brothers Brawl for Wii, began daily updates on his website, The Smash Brothers Dojo. The updates have been every weekday, in a blog-like format. Of course, many of these updates have just been throw aways. So, because of this we haven't been reporting on any of the updates there (it would take up over half our news page if we did).

But occasionally there would be some pretty significant announcements, videos, and music (though we get new screen shots everyday). Today, is one of those days. For the 1st time, they have made three posts in one day. And all of them are are pretty significant, though all are in the same sort of theme.

In Super Smash Brothers Melee, you would pretty much have to beat almost the entire game to unlock the complete sound test (loaded with every sound and music piece).
In Super Smash Brothers Brawl, "My Music" mode was just revealed. In "My Music" you can hear all of the sounds and music pieces you have unlocked so far. To unlock new music, you can pick up CDs that fall onto the course during play. So, between everything there is to collect so far, it is looking to have a lot of replay value, though no online was yet announced (but not denied either).

But wait, there is more to this mode than a simple sound test. This game is also proving to be very customizable. In Super Smash Brothers Melee, you can have an alternate track play by holding the shoulder buttons while the course loads, but it was only done on a few courses.
In this game, every course has a full list of tracks from the game to choose from. And with "My Music" you can adjust the odds of a particular track being played for that course. And it is for every course in the game and it seems like there will be LOADS of courses to choose from. Many of the choose-able songs are brand new, composed just for Brawl as remixes and such, while others are untouched MIDIs in their original forms. In the post, the game's director says that he is stuffing as many songs as he possibly can into the game.

In the other two posts, two new music pieces were revealed for the game and they are:
A remix of the "Gym theme" from Pokemon Red and Blue, which transitions into the evolution sequence. In my opinion, the transition is a bit rough, but what do I really know? I ain't a musical person, after all.
The other track that was revealed was the main theme for Super Smash Brothers Brawl. We previously predicted that the remix of the melee theme they posted about was the main theme, but I guess we were wrong.

For your enjoyment, the Super Smash Brothers Brawl main theme will be the opening music for the next episode of GamersCast. And the Pokemon Gym theme will be the closing music.

So far, it seems as if Super Smash Brothers Brawl could be a perfect game, but as I said, no online was yet announced....

And we will be discussing this mode along with all the other updates recently posted on the Smash Bros. Dojo on our next episode of GamersCast, set to be recorded this weekend.

Shocking Sales in Japan!

Some very surprising stats have just come in from Japan. Apparently, the console wars have all gone pro-Nintendo in Japan! With Nintendo DS Lite and Wii taking up more than 75% of all sales in the land of the rising sun. The closest competitor to Nintendo is actually the PSP, but even that only has 9% of sales.
What's most shocking is that Microsoft's Xbox 360 just barely manages to take up a total of 1% of sales. And no that is not a typo. One Percent.
For those of you who want a complete look at all stats, we typed up the sales of every console below (in percentage of all sales). Keep in mind when you see this that older consoles have more units on shelves than the newer ones do. Sales are listed from greatest to least:

- Nintendo DS Lite: 52.9%
- Nintendo Wii: 22.5%
- PlayStation Portable: 9.8%
- PlayStation 3: 7.5%
- PlayStation 2: 5.7%
- Microsoft Xbox 360: 1.0%

We are going to be discussing these statistics on the next episode of GamersCast, which as I have previously stated, is planned to be recorded this weekend. We will talk about what the stats mean for the future of these gaming companies.

Apple unveils new iPods

Once again, here I am hoping that Apple will soon unveil gaming potential whenever they release new products. And well, we're already going to be talking about it, on our next podcast episode (set to be recorded this weekend), so why not post about it here first?

Apple had just unveiled their two newest products earlier today. Another re-design of the iPod Nano is one. But the only difference is that it plays video and battery life is a bit over 5 hours. There will be a 4GB and 8GB model and they will be at a starting price of $149. No date has yet been announced, but the chance of this one having a gaming capability is actually fair because it still has the click wheel and well, I'll state the rest of my reasons on the podcast. :P

And the 2nd iPod Apple showed off is the iPod Touch. The iPod Touch is generally an iPhone (and looks exactly like it) except that there is no Edge networking, no phone inside (obviously), it only costs $299 (iPhone is $600), and there is an 8GB model and a 16GB model (iPhone has 4GB and 8GB model). No date has yet been announced. Of course, we have discussed how the iPhone may have the potential for gaming before, but is it possible that they were waiting for this iPod before unveiling it? Of course, that's just me trying to get you excited for our next podcast episode again. :P

Apple has also released a video to go along with their announcement of the iPod Touch. You can view it below, unless your reading this on the newsletter, in which case you'd have to go to GamersCastPodCast.com/news to see it.
