GamersCast Gaming Update!
Hey everyone! I very excited to announce a brand new segment to the podcast! It's the GamersCast Gaming Update! This is a new segment for all those weeks we can't schedule a full podcast episode! In the GamersCast Gaming Update, I'll quickly run through the past week's worth of gaming news (with some analysis) in about 5 minutes. But since this was the 1st edition, this week is 10 minutes long. And for the weeks we do have a normal GamersCast episode, the GamersCast Gaming Update will be inserted in the beginning of the episode. For example, next week's update will be played in the beginning of episode 26. So, yes, episode 26 will be released this weekend. I hope you guys like the change.
These updates will also be available on the podcast feed and the iTunes Music Store (for free as always).

The Soul Sword Has Met Its Match
Many of you may remember Soul Calibur II crazy characters like Link (Legend of Zelda), Heihachi(Tekken) and Spawn(Spawn) added to the Soul Calibur character roster on their respective platforms. At CES in Las Vegas today, a new trailer for Soul Calibur IV was shown. Along with many returning characters, there were two new characters that stood out. Darth Vader and Yoda from the Star Wars saga will be new caracters in Soul Calibur IV. With characters like these, online play and updated gameplay modes, this looks to be the best Soul Calibur yet. Look for Soul Calibur IV when it releases this summer on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

CES 08: Skype for PSP
Sony has just announced that Skype will soon be accessible through your PSP. Skype is a Voice over IP service which allows you to talk with others around the world, in amazing audio quality. This is actually the software we use to hold our podcast episodes, and I can say from experience it works remarkably well!
Skype will be available on your PSP after the next system update is released. This particular update is currently set to be ready by the end of January.

CES 08: Blu-Ray Interactive
At CES today, Sony again continued promoting the Blu-Ray format, by showing many new interactive features to come of it. These features include downloadable content from a service called "Blu-Ray Live" (real original :-P) and ways to transfer Blu-Ray movies from your PS3 to your PSP.
Now, the PS3 will be able to transfer a 2 hour Blu-Ray movie from the PS3 to the PSP, within 2 minutes with remarkable picture quality. Of course, you can't expect it to be as good as on your HD TV, but still pretty good.
That's the jist of it, but considering Blu-Ray movies will eventually get as big 300GB (or at least disc storage will be), I am a bit skeptical about how the PSP will store or support it. The demo only showed a 20 minute clip being transferred, so how this will all play out.... well, we'll have to wait and see, I suppose....

CES 08: 4K Technology Unveiled!
Well, Sony has done it. They have unveiled a display capable of showing video at 4 times the resolution of 1080p. You may call it 4320p if you wish, but for now it's just 4K Technology. In their display they showed this technology with a soccer game being played. However, there is currently no timetable for it's release.
Now, let's think about this from another perspective. As far as the format wars go, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are the top contenders, and while Blu-Ray seems to be getting more support from production companies, the format wars are far from over. Technically speaking the only advantage Blu-Ray has is about 5 GB more storage space per layer, with the possibility of 8 layers later down the road. However, as of now as far as we know, these formats can only play in 1080p, and with something 4 times as powerful out there, how can these formats live much longer? Not to mention if there isn't a medium to play 4k Technology with, what would be the point of purchasing such an insane TV? Unless, the currently unexplored 8 layers of Blu-Ray could potentially open up the possibility of 4k technology, the life cycle of these format wars may not last long. But at the current pricing of the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players, this generation could be skipped altogether.
On the gaming sides of things, this technology will definetely be utilized in the next generation of consoles, but now cost is the question. Considering how early in this generation that this is coming around, it will most likely be much more affordable once the next consoles come out in about 4 to 5 years. But as we have no idea, of 4k's official release or current pricing it still could be a bit pricey. Though, I have a feeling Nintendo will probably just stick to 1080p, to be more cost efficient and since it would very easy for them to produce this far down the line.
However, the very technical specifications of how 4k technology works is still very unknown so I could be very wrong in my speculation right now. I'll keep you posted on any further developments.

CES 2008: PSP GPS Navigator
A long time ago on GamersCast, I made a joke about Sony attempting to shove a GPS navigator inside the PSP. Well, guess what? IT HAPPENED!
Yes, a GPS navigator will soon become available on the PSP this Spring. Coming with a detachable GPS and a UMD disc of maps, the GPS will be able to give you driving directions to any destination no matter where you are (as long it's supported your disc)! You'll get a visual of your location through 3D maps and preloaded landmarks and points of interest to get you where you need to go. The GPS will also come with a car monunt and an Car adapter to save battery life on the road!
As I said before the GPS will be released in the spring of 2008 and will cost €299 to everything. Except there's just one little problem, once released maps of the United States are not included! But you will get maps of UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Nordic!
