Grand Theft Auto IV Breaks In Big Bucks

The highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto IV was released last week on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.  As you may know, many many people went out and bought it.  So how did it do?  As expected Grand Theft Auto IV broke the record Halo 3 had for the biggest entertainment history.  GTA IV sold more than 3 million copies on its first day and has currently 6 million copies under its belt.  That is over $500 million for Take Two and Rockstar.  I have been playing a lot of the game so far.  So what do I think of it so far?  Find out in my review which will be coming sometime this week.

Rock Band Finally Gets Albums

The amazing award winning game Rock Band from Harmonix, MTV Games, and EA has had several amazing announcements as well as amazing downloadable content including the Boston Pack, Still Alive from Portal which was free, and this weeks classic pack as well as a new song from Montley Crue debuting exclusively on Rock Band.  Rock Band received a patch earlier this month which included the in game music store.  Rock Band was also announced for Europe.  The game will come out on Xbox 360 on May 23 and to all other platforms (Playstation 3, Playstation 2, and Wii) on August 29.  Even though they will be paying double what America paid for the game and will have to buy two separate packages (one comes with the instruments while the other comes with the game) I still say it is worth every penny and that Eruope should not wait for a price drop to buy this amazing game.  The Wii version of Rock Band which will include the core gameplay experience as well as five exclusive songs including Dirty Little Secret and Rockaway Beach which can already be found as downloadable content will come out to North America on June 22.  Today, Harmonix announced that full albums will finally be coming to Rock Band's collection of downloadable songs.  The first album to come to Rock Band will be Judas Priest's Screaming For Vengeance.  There are ten really great songs in this album including You Got Another Thing Coming, Electric Eye and Devil Child.  The album will cost $14.99 or 1200 Microsoft Points (you can also buy the songs seperately for the usual $1.99 or 160 points) and will come out April 22 to Xbox Live Marketplace and to the Playstation Network Store on April 24.  Two more albums were also announced including The Cars self-titled debut in May and The Pixies' Doolittle in June.  $14.99 will not be the standard album price and Harmonix says that they have many albums for Rock Band in the works.  They also announced that 8 million songs have been downloaded on XBLM and PSN.  If you have not bought this game yet, unless you are waiting for the Wii version go and buy this amazing game now.  It is an experience every gamer and music lover should try out.  For more information on Rock Band, go to www.rockband.com or check out my review on the podcast feed.

Nintendo DS named "Best Selling System of 2007"

Today the Nintendo DS has just been named the best selling system of 2007 according to statistics by Nintendo of America. Between January 1st and November 30th, Nintendo's handheld sold over 6 million units. In fact Nintendo's handheld is selling so well that they claim at least one Nintendo DS is purchased every 5 seconds. Yes, 2007 isn't over yet, but based on the rates of manufacturing and such they pretty much clinched. Especially with the release of those new bundles and designs for the system. I mean heck, in the time itntook you to read this another 6 systems were already sold!

Shocking Sales in Japan!

Some very surprising stats have just come in from Japan. Apparently, the console wars have all gone pro-Nintendo in Japan! With Nintendo DS Lite and Wii taking up more than 75% of all sales in the land of the rising sun. The closest competitor to Nintendo is actually the PSP, but even that only has 9% of sales.
What's most shocking is that Microsoft's Xbox 360 just barely manages to take up a total of 1% of sales. And no that is not a typo. One Percent.
For those of you who want a complete look at all stats, we typed up the sales of every console below (in percentage of all sales). Keep in mind when you see this that older consoles have more units on shelves than the newer ones do. Sales are listed from greatest to least:

- Nintendo DS Lite: 52.9%
- Nintendo Wii: 22.5%
- PlayStation Portable: 9.8%
- PlayStation 3: 7.5%
- PlayStation 2: 5.7%
- Microsoft Xbox 360: 1.0%

We are going to be discussing these statistics on the next episode of GamersCast, which as I have previously stated, is planned to be recorded this weekend. We will talk about what the stats mean for the future of these gaming companies.
