Editorial: Nintendo Vs. Apple: The Great Debate

Over the last couple of weeks I have heard so many debates and assumptions about the portable game market that drive me crazy. Some moron on CNN (no seriously, he is a moron. He said he is a hardcore gamer that grew up of Halo meanwhile he looks like he's at least 25) said that Nintendo 3DS does not stand a chance against Apple's iPhone. Many other people have come out and said similar things. Yes, the iPhone and other iOS devices like the iPod Touch and iPad all play games. The games on iOS devices are extremely cheap and attract a lot of consumers. Even the iPhone 4 is $50 cheaper than a Nintendo 3DS and the iPod Touch is also cheaper by $20. Being both an iPhone and Nintendo 3DS owner, I definitely see that both of these are winners but both Apple and Nintendo have succeeded and failed in certain areas.

Let's start off with the iPhone. I love playing games on my iPhone every once in a while but it is not something I do regularly. The reasons I'm not playing Angry Birds or Infinity Blade every second I can is that I feel my iPhone 3GS is not a device meant for hardcore gaming. I am constantly getting interrupted while I play with emails, text messages, various push notifications, and of course phone calls. Another problem is the touch screen. It works great but some games like FPS games really do need actual analog sticks and buttons in order to be enjoyed to the fullest and unfortunately, iOS devices do not have that. My final problem with playing games on my iPhone is battery life. Games suck the battery dry very quickly and I need my iPhone to always have some juice in case of an emergency. I'll play for maybe ten or fifteen minutes at a time but when I see more than one tenth of my battery gone in that same amount of time, I immediately stop and instead do something less battery intensive like listening to music. The iPhone does have some great games but they only appeal to a one particular market. The games on iPhone should be something that does not have a lot of depth within the gameplay. A user should be able to play it for a small amount of time each day. Are hardcore games with a lot of depth possible on iPhone? Absolutely, the iPhone is pretty powerful. The problem is battery life and the constant obtrusive notifications and calls. The pricing of iPhone games is also somewhat off. A game like Angry Birds will give players at least $10-$20 of value for only $1. It is a smart idea but it is not healthy for those who really want to make a high quality, high budget iPhone game and charge $30 for it. It would probably sell like a led balloon. Simple ideas like Doodle Jump and Fruit Ninja are what sells. They are games that easy to pick up and hard to put down. These are the games that makes iPhone popular but they are not necessarily the types of games everyone desires.

I personally like more "hardcore" games which contain a lot of depth and take a while to play through. Nintendo 3DS as well as other gaming devices like Nintendo DS, PSP, and NGP offer these types of games as well as the "casual" types of games iPhone is known for (for the record, I hate this whole hardcore and casual thing. It is such a dividing line and these phrases need to go away in order for the game industry to move forward to allow more types of video games to be more widely accepted). If you did not realize it, Nintendo 3DS like the iOS devices is also a multimedia device. It takes 3D pictures (albeit low resolution ones), plays .MP3 music files, plays 3D movies, and browses the web. The iPhone may do some of these things better in 2D but even still, 3DS owners are missing nothing. I have heard the 3DS battery life is low but I have experienced no problems as of yet. Sure, the iPhone is definitely capable of running games like Pilotwings Resort. Even Street Fighter IV has an iPhone version. What makes these games work better on a 3DS rather than a mobile phone is that the 3DS actually has buttons which is significantly better than virtual buttons on a touch screen. There are also no obtrusive notifications to worry about so I can continue playing without the worry of being interrupted. Also, the 3D visuals are amazing and 3D will probably stay exclusive to Nintendo for a long time as Apple will probably wait for this glasses free 3D technology to be more advanced and have a much wider viewing angle.

Games with long single player modes and a lot of depth are much better off on a dedicated handheld gaming platform. Developers that want to go all out and create a very long, high quality gaming experience need to do so on a handheld gaming system like Nintendo 3DS and NGP. Games that are simple and do not have much content within them are better off on iOS devices. Both are great gaming devices but it is easy to see that both products will succeed. One will not take market share from the other. The difference in games and features like 3D will most likely force many consumers to get both.

Editorial: How Will Game Center Change iPhone Games?

Earlier this week, Apple announced the all new update to iPhone known as iPhone OS 4.0. It will be released this Summer for iPhone and iPod Touch and this Fall for iPad. Some of its most important new features include multitasking, the ability to organize apps into folders, change the wallpaper, iBooks, and iAd, a new way of doing mobile advertising. For gamers, the new app and feature known as Game Center may change how games are played on iPhone.

Game Center will be a unified social gaming network from Apple. You will be able to invite friends to games, do matchmaking, look at leaderboards, and score achievements. It pretty much has all of the standard features one would expect from a social gaming network. It will work with any game that wants to support it. I think it is great that Apple has listened to its fans and saw just how many games are on the App Store and how many different social gaming networks there were on iPhone. Having one unified account will make things so much simpler but in the beginning, there might be some problems.

There are already numerous social gaming networks on the platform. The most popular include Plus+ from Ngmoco and OpenFeint by Aurora Feint but there are a handful of others. According to Scott Forstall, SVP of iPhone software and Apple CEO Steve Jobs during a Q and A after the press event, they stated that some of these networks wanted Apple to create one unified service. They were not specific on who asked. Many of those in charge of some of the most popular gaming networks on iPhone stated that they loved the idea of Game Center and want to support it. Will the existing social gaming networks on iPhone die? Yeah, they probably will. My only fear is that my achievements from other games of the different gaming networks will not transfer over to Game Center. Apple should work on a way for other social gaming networks to migrate a user's account with their progress and achievements. This might be the only way to ensure Game Center is the only network on iPhone.

Games will be sure to come out on the network and offer easy ways to get achievements. The ability to see other games that your friends are playing might persuade you to buy a game in order to play it with others. It will be easier to find out what friends are playing and boost the sales of games on iPhone. Game Center has a huge opportunity to help games and social networking become even better on iPhone.

Editorial: Will iPad Revolutionize Gaming?

As you all know, the highly anticipated tablet computer known as the iPad will launch tomorrow morning. The iPad, created by Apple Inc. has a high resolution ten inch touch display. The iPhone which launched almost three years ago has shown that its multitouch capabilities, accelerometer, 3D graphics comparable to Nintendo DS and PSP, and internet connection features provide a very unique gaming experience. Players can interact with games in new ways which makes some games on the iPhone such as Flight Control, Plants vs. Zombies, Rolondo, Doodle Jump and Pocket God stand out from the crowd as unique titles. Smaller developers have created very unique experiences and are continuing to do so with thousands of games already released on iPhone and hundreds of millions downloaded. The digital distribution model allows developers to control their price and change it at will. iPhone games and applications have succeeded in taking the spotlight away from many other mobile phones, MP3 players, and even portable gaming systems. Children are even starting to ask for iPod Touches for Christmas instead of a Nintendo DS or PSP.

Will iPad take this successful formula of the iTunes ecosystem and App Store and allow developers and consumers to take gaming to the next level on this new device? So far the iPad lineup of apps at launch consists of retooled apps that were already made for iPhone. Games such as Plants vs. Zombies, Flight Control, Call of Duty: World at War Zombies, Fieldrunners, Super Monkey Ball and many more are receiving new versions that are made specifically for iPad. The larger, higher resolution screen allows games to be bigger and better than ever before. The games unfortunately will cost you money even if you bought the iPhone version.

Konami made a smart move by putting the iPad version of its Metal Gear Solid Touch game inside the same app as the iPhone version so when the user opens the game, it will be different depending on which device they are using whether it is on iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. These universal apps will probably gain popularity over the decision to make consumers pay for something they already have. Since iPad can open and play iPhone apps, app developers will most likely see an increase in sales. I believe that the iPad could hold its own as being an incredible gaming device, possibly being better than iPhone. I could imagine a future where consumers will pick up an iPad not just to browse the web, check email, read books, or stream high quality video, but to play all of the great games it is offering and will offer in the future.

Gaming On iPhone Will Change With iPhone 3.0 Software

Earlier this week, Apple showed off the new iPhone 3.0 SDK and software update. Developers are getting a new updated SDK with over 1000 new APIs or tools that the developers can use. Many of them have to do with games. Some of these APIs include

In App Commerce: The ability for developers to charge for extra content on the apps themselves. Examples of this include buying levels for games or e-books for an e-book reader. These purchases are linked to your iTunes account and are limited to paid apps only ("free apps remain free").

Peer to Peer: The ability to link iPhones locally via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. This can be used for multiplayer in games as well as trading information in other non game apps.

Application specific acessories: Applications can now have accessories that connect via the dock and Bluetooth that interact with apps.

Push Notifications: The ability for an app to send you an alert even if the app is quited out. The feature which was delayed because of scaling issues is back and will be on iPhone 3.0. This is best used for instant messaging apps.

Other features such as in app emails, iPod music accessible in apps, integration of Google Maps, and so much more. Many apps were demonstrated with two weeks of work done with the SDK.

Meebo showed off an IM client with push notifications

EA showed off an early version of The Sims 3 with in app commerce to buy new items like a stereo that plays your iPod music. The game also had beautiful 3D graphics.

ESPN showed an alert client which gives you sports news via push notifications and streams video well.

Johnson Johnson showed off a diabetes app which used a blood sugar reader that connects to the dock and the iPhone app keeps track of your daily blood sugar intake. This was a very in depth app and yes a guy actually pricked his finger on the stage.

ngmoco, the creators of Rolando showed two apps that were done in only two weeks. The first was a game called Touch Pets which is a pet simulator similar to Nintendogs. Push notifications and peer to peer connectivity are used to make puppies have playdates and in app commerce lets you buy new items for the dogs.

The second game was an online FPS called LiveFire. It will feature online multiplayer via Wi-Fi or 3G and will take advantage of push notifications to call friends for help and in app commerce to buy new weapons. This was by far the most impressive app shown.

Many other features for the costumer were also announced such as copy, cut and paste, Landscape and search within all key apps, Spotlight on homepage, Youtube accounts, subscriptions and ratings within Youtube app, shake to shuffle, and MMS as well as compatibility with Bluetooth headphones which are iPhone 3G exclusive due to hardware changes.

iPhone 3.0 will launch this Summer for iPhone 3G and the first gen iPhone (minus MMS and bluetooth headphones). The update will also come to the iPod Touch for $10. Developers have the new SDK and are working on bringing new apps. More news to come.

iPhone Firmware 2.2 Allows Podcast Downloads

First off, I would like to take this moment to sincerely apologize for the lack of updates to the site over the course of the past month. Between school, work, sports, and other things, it has become increasingly harder to update the website, but remember that I will NEVER stop thinking about it, even when you think I already did. And I also regret to inform everyone that due to delays in editing, episode 31 of the podcast will not be out until Thanksgiving weekend!

But with that being said, Apple has released iPhone and iPod Touch firmware update 2.2! Aside from the usual bug fixes and slight performace enhancements, this update most notably now allows you to download podcasts right to your iPod from the iTunes Wi-Fi Store!! So, now you don't need to be at your computer to enjoy GamersCast when we release new content.

So, head your iPhone/Touch over to: http://iTunes.GamersCastPodcast.com and add it to your Home Screen to be brought right to GamersCast's iTunes Wi-Fi Store Page! (It will bring you to the normal iTunes Page if you follow the link on your computer)

Apple Impresses with iPod Stats and New Lineup (iPod Touch As Next Great Gaming Device?)

Today, Apple showed off its new iPod lineup at its "Lets Rock" event in San Francisco. A new iTunes was released today with HD television shows, grid view of albums and genius playlists which put songs together that sound alike into one playlist.

The new iPod Nano replaces the wide design with something a little bit longer in length. It is the thinnest iPod to date. It also has an accelerometer built in for portrait and landscape viewing of the new user interface. New features include genius playlists and a "shake to shuffle" feature (which I think should be a standard feature in all iPods with accelerometers.) The new iPod Nano will be available in nine colors starting at $149 for 8GB and $199 for 16GB.

The new iPod Touch is even thinner and includes volume controls, a built in speaker for "casual listening," genius playlists and a Nike + iPod native app. It seems like Apple is trying to sell the iPod Touch as a gaming device. Spore Origins and Need for Speed from EA were shown as well as Real Soccer 2009 from Gameloft. Steve Jobs the CEO of Apple also called iPod Touch the greatest portable gaming device available. The new iPod Touch known as "The worlds funnest iPod" will be available in three different models. An 8GB for $229, a 16GB for $299 and a 32GB for $399. All of the products mentioned are available now.
The new software features in iPod Touch like genius playlists and Nike + iPod are available in software update 2.1 for first gen iPod Touches which will be free for all iPod Touch 2.0 users. The iPhone will get its 2.1 update on Friday which will fix many problems and bugs and will presumably have the new software features of iPod Touch.

Editor's Note: Just to clarify. When Steve Job's said that the iPod Touch speaker was for "casual listening" , he was actually making a mean joke. :-P

The iPod Touch speaker is the equivalent of the sounds a Game & Watch handheld system would make, to give you an idea.

Super Monkey Ball Update

At this year's E3, Sega announced that an update would be coming out to correct all of the control issues found in Super Monkey Ball for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The update will feature a new calibration and sensitivity menu, so you can align controls to your liking. They say this after many reviewers were quite brutal on the game (I was waiting 'till E3 ended to release mine). The update will become available on the iPhone App Store in the near future.

New Map App in iPhone 3G

The new Map App in iPhone 3G allows for pinpoint accuracy down to where your location is determied by a single pin on the map. It can even actively determine your location in real time, without needing to refresh thanks to 3G technology. But in the instance where no GPS signal can be found, the iPhone 3G can revert to the traditional method of location, using phone towers and routers.

iPhone 3G Supports Bluetooth + Other Wireless

iPhone 3G also appears to support Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, which was one of the only flaws in the original iPhone. And along with all the other technologies that make WiFi, EDGE, and 3G available, Apple needed to make some antennas for it. But they cleverly hid them, so they are completely hidden from view.

The antennas are located around the camera lense, around the metal audio jack, and inside the screen itself. So, now you won't lose signal every time your hand moves over while using the internet!

YouTube App Update

The keynote may have ended, but even more updates are spilling out from Apple's website. So, I decided to pick through the site with a fine tooth comb to make sure I picked up on everything. And though it wasn't advertised at all, I ntoiced that there was definetely a different look to the YouTube, which means that an update to the YouTube App will be available in the iPhone 2.0 update. Though it mainly appears to be a work in progress, as not much else appears to have changed other than text color.
