Call of Duty Moves in New Directions

Although the two heads of the Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward are no longer with the company, Activision is promising a healthy future for the Call of Duty series.

Infinity Ward will be making not one but two Modern Warfare 2 map packs both releasing this year. The first map pack will come this Spring and will appear first on Xbox 360 with other systems getting the pack later on in the season. Activision also cites Infinity Ward as "central to Call of Duty's future".

Treyarch Games will be in charge of making the next Call of Duty game releasing later this year. Treyarch has previously made Call of Duty 3 and Call of Duty: World at War.

A new studio called Sledgehammer Games lead by Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey who were the creative leads on Dead Space will develop the next Call of Duty game releasing in 2011. It is to be in the "action-adventure" genre which means it may not be a first-person shooter after all. G4 reports that this game may not be the official Call of Duty game for 2011. They think that the citation from Activision above reveals that Infinity Ward may be already developing a Call of Duty game for 2011.

The future of the hit franchise looks bright and promising. With the prayers that Activision will not hand the rights to someone who will mess with the great quality of these hit games, Call of Duty will only get more epic, more thrilling, and even more popular than ever before.

This is awesome since I really like COD, but I really hope they don't hand it over to a no name company that "messes up" the franchise, as you stated above. I really hope it's NOT third person mode! P.S. Count me in for the blur beta :P
